Family Fun These School Holidays with Floriade About Town

Looking for ways to keep the kids entertained these school holidays? Floriade About Town is blooming with family-friendly experiences across Canberra, from creative workshops and hands-on activities to dinosaurs, science, animals and immersive exhibitions.

Start in the city at Canberra Museum and Gallery, where RELICS: A New World Rises invites visitors to discover intricate miniature worlds built from LEGO® bricks hidden inside everyday objects. Families can also get creative with a special Floriade About Town workshop inspired by traditional Polish pająki folk art, creating colourful hanging decorations to take home.

Young creators can get hands-on at Canberra Glassworks, with Floriade-inspired workshops exploring flowers, bugs and butterflies through glass art. At the National Archives of Australia, children can discover how Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin imagined a city in bloom before creating their own floral-inspired artworks.

Nearby, the National Library of Australia is celebrating spring with free flower-themed drawing, colouring and word search activities, botanical displays and garden-inspired book collections, making it an ideal stop for curious young minds. At Atomic Café inside Questacon, science meets spring through a colour-changing butterfly pea flower drink that transforms from blue to purple before your eyes, while the Royal Australian Mint is offering collectible coins, floral exhibitions, tours and family-friendly activities inspired by Australian flowers.

Animal lovers can head to the National Zoo & Aquarium, where Zoo in Bloom explores the important role pollinators play in nature through discovery trails, floral installations and educational activities throughout the school holidays.

Creative families won’t want to miss Poppyfield Commons in Dickson, where lantern-making workshops, creative writing experiences and community events bring Floriade’s floral theme to life. Over in Braddon, Haig Park Village Markets will host special school holiday workshops on 4 and 11 October, featuring magical potion-making, nature play and floral-themed arts and crafts alongside live music, market stalls and delicious food.

For families looking for even more adventure, Gold Creek is packed with Floriade fun. From dinosaurs and miniature worlds to mini golf, sweet treats and photography competitions, there’s plenty to discover.
