Sing with Toby is a lively group of 30 adults who gather weekly to explore a broad spectrum of music – from South African and Scottish hymns to simple rounds, free improvisations, and even the occasional pop song. Under the expert guidance of opera singer and choir conductor Tobias Cole, participants dive into the art of singing, unburdened by the need to read sheet music.
Thanks to a progressive collaboration with the ANU Community Music Centre and Tuggeranong Arts Centre, choir members are given the space and tools to develop their vocal abilities. Through engaging vocal exercises and diverse musical selections, they focus on key aspects of singing, including vocal technique, language, rhythm, and harmony. Most importantly, participants learn the art of ‘hearkening’ – actively listening and applying this skill to free improvisation, fostering a deeper connection to the joy of singing.
