Use It All: The Cornersmith Guide to A More Sustainable Kitchen

Buy Less, Buy Whole, Use it All

ABC Radio Canberra Breakfast host Lish Fejer is joined by Alex Elliott-Howery and Jaimee Edwards discussing their book, Use It All: The Cornersmith Guide to a More Sustainable Kitchen.

This practical handbook is an invitation to reduce food waste while eating generously. It’s a book for people juggling real life and trying to make better choices in their kitchens.

For years Alex Elliott-Howery and Jaimee Edwards, from boundary-breaking food community Cornersmith, experimented in their home kitchens to figure out how to feed their families efficiently, affordably and sustainably. The result is this invaluable guide to modern food wisdom.

Use It All offers a simple, delicious way to cook and eat by buying less, wasting less and making more with what you’ve got.

Lish Fejer

Lish Fejer grew up on large stations in the bush before studying Biochemistry at ANU.

After graduating she ventured off on her bike to cook in Europe.

After a few years of eating her wages in cheese, she squeezed back into Australia to work at Questacon.

She has worked in the field of science communication as a presenter, speaker, writer and exhibition developer ever since.

Lish was co-host of ABC TV’s eco-home-reno show Carbon Cops.

She joined the ABC Radio Canberra team in 2010 and she loved working on the wireless so much, she didn’t want to leave.

Lish rides a bike, does science experiments at parties (she met her husband when she fired a scone out of a potato cannon), has over 15,000 worms and loves Canberra.

Jaimee Edwards is the workshop coordinator and teacher at Cornersmith Cooking School. She shares her passion for home cooking and fermenting in workshops that teach students how to ferment, brew their own kombucha, make dumplings, herbal teas, Christmas puddings and much more. Jaimee is committed to improving what people know about the food they cook, eat and throw away. Jaimee is interested in food history and politics and believes that knowing an ingredient’s story makes it even more pleasurable to cook and enjoy.

Alex Elliott-Howery is the co-founder of what has become a thriving and boundary-breaking food community in inner Sydney. She runs the Cornersmith cafes, renowned for their big hearts and strong conscience when it comes to sustainably sourced food. Alex teaches pickling and preserving workshops at the Cornersmith cooking school, the Picklery. She is the co-author of two cookbooks, Cornersmith Recipes from the Café and Picklery and the recent release Salads & Pickles.

The “Godmother of Preserving” and Cornersmith co-founder, Alex Elliott-Howery has established herself as the authority on preserving, a pioneer in the war on food waste and a trusted source for the future of food. Alex has appeared on national TV, notably the ABC’s Gardening Australia, and Channel 10’s Studio 10. She has also featured on multiple national radio stations, podcasts, online media outlets and spoken on numerous panels including for Woolworths and Goodfood Month
